What is a root canal?
In layman’s terms, a root canal procedure is the elimination of bacteria from an infected root by removing the inflamed or infected pulp, cleaning & disinfecting the inside of the tooth, and then finally sealing it back up with a biologically compatible material.
Why do you need a root canal?
Root canal procedures are typically needed for a cracked tooth, a deep cavity, or issues from a previous filling.
Common symptoms that could indicate you need a root canal:
Severe pain while chewing or biting
Pimples on the gums
A chipped or cracked tooth
Lingering sensitivity to hot or cold, even after the sensation has been removed
Swollen or tender gums
Deep decay or darkening of the gums
What happens during a root canal?
Modern root canal treatments are nothing like the old days. The procedure has been perfected over the years and is now comparable to a routine filling. (Especially if you have a good endodontist…like Dr. Korch at Pittsburgh Endodontics. Cough, cough, wink, wink.)
Root canals can usually be completed in one appointment, are relatively painless, and are extremely effective.
The endodontist removes the infected pulp and nerve in the root of the tooth, cleans and shapes the inside of the root canal, then fills and seals the space. Afterward, your dentist will place a crown on the tooth to protect and restore it to its original function.

How much does a root canal cost?
The cost varies depending on the complexity of the problem and which tooth is affected. Molars are more difficult to treat therefore usually increasing the cost. Most dental insurance policies provide some coverage for endodontic treatments.
Generally, endodontic treatment and restoration of the natural tooth are less expensive than the alternative of having the tooth extracted. An extracted tooth must be replaced with an implant or bridge to restore chewing function and prevent adjacent teeth from shifting. — aae.org
What are the benefits of a root canal?
Efficient chewing
Normal biting force and sensation
Natural appearance
Protects other teeth from excessive wear or strain
Does a root canal hurt?
With the help of anesthesia, root canal surgery isn’t more painful than a regular dental procedure, such as a filling or getting a wisdom tooth removed.
However, a root canal is typically a bit more sore or numb afterwards, and can cause mild discomfort for a few days.
